Grades 9-12 In a not-so-distant future, Earth's ice caps have melted, unleashing a deadly disease that wipes out the majority of the human population, and a young Black girl named Eve has awakened from a cryogenic sleep in a secured bunker to find she is humanity's last hope. Accompanying Eve though the postapocalyptic U.S. is Wexler, an AI that resembles her favorite childhood teddy bear. As she traverses the country in search of a mysterious vault that might help save the planet, Eve faces the terrifying creatures that used to be human, as well as the realization that nothing--including her own identity---is what it seems. LaValle infuses lots of compelling world building into his intense, attention-grabbing story, which is full of well-earned twists and turns. Mi-Gyeong's artwork perfectly suits the mood, showing the gritty, ruined future planet but hinting at hopefulness for Eve's mission. Fans of plot-driven dystopian-future sci-fi will appreciate this immersive story about a world full of secrets and despair but also promise.
