United in a common cause...

Lady Juliette Matthews longs to be much more than just another pretty ornament in society. But using her recently acquired fortune to do some good is more complicated than she anticipated. Young ladies are not expected to risk their safety in helping the less fortunate. And the one gentleman who could help in her mission is stubborn, infernally handsome—and far too honorable to act on their mutual attraction.

And in a desire impossible to deny...

Florian Lowell has suddenly been made heir to the Duke of Redding—a far cry from his status as a dedicated physician. Yet even with his new role as the country's most eligible bachelor, the beautiful, fearless Juliette is utterly beyond his reach. The scandalous circumstances of his birth would destroy both their reputations if they became known. But when a more urgent danger threatens Juliette's life, Florian must gamble everything...including the heart only one woman can tame.

Narrator Carolyn Morris sets the scene in London society as Lady Juliette Matthews falls in love Florian Lowell, a physician and heir of the Duke of Redding. Florian battles an outbreak of typhus in the slums of St. Giles. He also becomes aware of a secret: His biological father is a notorious criminal. Morris aptly narrates the story as different characters fall ill, giving their voices a raspy quality as they struggle for breath. The listener expects Florian's father to have a more sinister tone of voice, given his evil plotting to bring harm to Florian, but that is not the case. Still, this is a good listening experience. Barnes’s third Diamonds in the Rough Regency (after The Duke of Her Desire) revels in the power of unconditional love. Florian Lowell, a well-respected London physician and recent heir to a dukedom, bemoans his status as a very eligible bachelor. Juliette Matthews, sister of the Duke of Huntley, has admired Florian for his skills as a physician, and is somewhat surprised by her attraction to him at a London ball. Juliette soon becomes a committee member at St. Agatha’s Hospital, where Florian works, and donates a sizable sum to stop the spread of typhus. But Florian tries to resist his attraction to the beautiful Juliette, believing that he has been tainted by his notorious father’s crimes. When Juliette contracts typhus while nursing a friend, Florian takes her into his home to care for her and realizes that he can no longer ignore his love for her. Barnes’s fast-paced novel is complete with ever-present sizzling sexual tension between Florian and Juliette, whose romance is counterbalanced by the realism of medical advances of the times.

An heiress decides to use her fortune for good and winds up working closely with a celebrated doctor. The two share an attraction, but a dark secret keeps him from wooing her and ultimately places her in grave danger.Bored by the season and feeling she wants to make a difference, heiress Lady Juliette Matthews decides to support a hospital that caters to the poor, then becomes more involved when there is a typhus outbreak. Serving on an advisory board for the hospital highlights her compassion, intelligence, and ingenuity, and Florian Lowell, the famed physician, takes notice. Recently named heir to his uncle's title and estate, Florian knows he should marry, and he'd like nothing more than to claim Juliette as his own. However, "he was not in the market for a wife and had no intention of ever gaining one." He's long harbored the shameful secret that he's illegitimate and that his biological father is a notorious criminal. Society believes the man is dead, but Florian knows he's alive and seems intent on harming people Florian loves. As Florian wards off an epidemic and fights his feelings for Juliette while trying to get to the bottom of his father's nefarious plans, Juliette is confused by his mixed messages. Soon, though, she's fighting for her own survival, and if she lives, she's determined to fight for the man she loves. Fascinating medical and historical tidbits enrich an engaging storyline, and Florian especially is an interesting character. But Florian's fickle treatment of Juliette, as well as their internal and external denials of feelings that are clearly there, becomes tiresome. Also, so much tension is built up toward the end that the quick resolutions to a number of conflicts feel anticlimactic.Generally smart and action-packed but slightly uneven.
