      Marisa and Jake are delighted to find Kate, seemingly the perfect boarder, whose rent payment will help pay the bills and facilitate their having a child. But as fertility treatments and failed attempts unspool, Kate becomes overly familiar with Jake, and her knowing a whole lot more about Marisa and Jake than she ever let on creates the kind of suspense that would seem to merit the 75,000-copy first printing. British author of the well-received The Party and host of the award-winning podcast How To Fail.

      This domestic thriller from Day (The Party, 2017) serves up a dramatic plot twist that will leave readers questioning everything. Marisa is thrilled to find Jake, who's perfect and wants to start a family with her. Jake makes Marisa feel safe and secure, feelings she never had growing up after her mother abandoned her and her hapless father. As Jake's job falters and money tightens up, the couple decides to take in a renter to their London flat. Kate is lithe and hip, everything Marisa feels she is not. Marisa's confidence falters further after a distressing visit from Jake's cold and controlling mother, Annabelle, and she begins to suspect that Jake and Kate are having an affair. Marisa is a sympathetic character, but when the point of view switches to Kate's, things take a sharp turn. To say anything more would be too much, but know that Day offers a page-turner that lightly incorporates mental health and infertility. While it may be unrealistic, it's also highly readable, and fans of the genre will gobble it up.

      Day’s clever latest (after The Party) delves into the shaky life of a pregnant woman who is further disrupted once a lodger moves into her home. Having survived a rough childhood and sexual assault, Marisa finally finds peace when she moves in with her boyfriend, Jake. But she’s only known him for three months, and there’s a red flag: his frosty mother, Annabelle, constantly dotes on him and touts their closeness while making clear her dislike for Marisa. Still, Marisa relishes the feeling of safety Jake gives her and chooses not to rock the boat. When money gets tight, the couple agree to lease a room in their house to Kate, who immediately makes herself at home and acts very familiar and affectionate with Jake. Marisa begins to suspect that Jake and Kate are having an affair, possibly with Annabelle’s blessing. Day successfully turns the narrative on its head in the second half, which tells the whole story very differently from Kate’s point of view. She also cannily subverts a few tired tropes to create a convincing final act, with a twist rooted in clues that were there all along. Readers will thoroughly enjoy this.
